Embedded Software for Household Appliances & Smart Home

Qt/QML touchscreen HMIs, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth connectivity and smart home integration for the connected appliance generation.

Connected Appliances: Software that connects and delights

Modern household appliances are more than electrical machines – they are connected devices with touchscreens, app control and smart home integration. BitPointer GmbH specialises in embedded software development for household appliances: from Qt/QML touchscreen interfaces via Wi-Fi/Bluetooth connectivity through to companion apps for iOS and Android.

Qt/QML HMI development for capacitive touchscreens (embedded Linux, RTOS)
Wi-Fi (802.11 a/b/g/n/ac), Bluetooth 5 & Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE)
Smart home integration: Matter, Zigbee, Z-Wave, Apple HomeKit, Google Home
Companion apps (iOS & Android) with React Native or Flutter
OTA update systems for field device fleets
Energy-efficiency optimisation: sleep modes, load management, EU energy label

Why BitPointer for household appliance software?

Qt/QML expertise

Qt/QML is the leading framework for embedded HMI. We build fluid, engaging interfaces that perform on ARM Cortex processors with limited resources – including animations, transitions and multilingual support.

Smart home ecosystem

Matter is the new standard for cross-vendor smart home compatibility. We implement Matter device certification as well as HomeKit, Google Home and Alexa integration so your devices fit seamlessly into every smart home ecosystem.

Energy efficiency

EU energy label requirements are getting stricter. We optimise software sleep modes, implement dynamic load management and support energy-consumption measurement preparation for certifications.

Currently in use: HMI for cooking appliances

Ongoing project with a global household appliance manufacturer

We develop and extend graphical user interfaces (HMI) for connected cooking appliances of a leading, globally operating household appliance manufacturer. The project shows what modern embedded HMI looks like in practice:

  • Development and enhancement of Qt 6.x / QML HMI interfaces for connected cooking appliances
  • Implementation of new functionality for device operation and backend integration via MQTT
  • Design and delivery of automated UI tests (Squish) to safeguard the user interfaces
  • Build infrastructure: CMake, Jenkins, Docker, JFrog Artifactory, Gitea
  • Development with RAG integration, Lua scripting, Java/Jakarta EE backends

Qt 6.x & QML

We develop with current Qt 6.x LTS and QML for fluid, engaging touchscreen interfaces – with animations, transitions and multilingual support on resource-constrained hardware.

UI test automation (Squish)

Squish by Froglogic is the standard tool for automated Qt/QML UI tests. We build Squish testsuites that reliably detect regressions in touchscreen interfaces.

MQTT & backend integration

Connected household appliances communicate with cloud backends via MQTT. We integrate the HMI with low-level C++ backends and Java/Jakarta EE service layers.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about embedded software for household appliances

For simple devices without a display, RTOS solutions (FreeRTOS, Zephyr) are a good fit. For devices with a touchscreen and network connectivity, embedded Linux (Yocto, Buildroot) is the first choice – it offers a broad software ecosystem, Qt support and active security updates. For the highest real-time requirements, we combine Linux with real-time patches or use a dual-system approach (Linux + RTOS).

Matter (formerly CHIP) is a cross-vendor standard for smart home devices jointly developed by Apple, Google, Amazon and Samsung. Matter-certified devices work in any compatible smart home system without proprietary bridges. Communication happens locally over the home network (Thread, Wi-Fi) – without necessarily requiring a cloud. For manufacturers, Matter certification is an important competitive differentiator today.

Secure OTA updates require: cryptographic signing of every update package (RSA or ECDSA), integrity checks on download, A/B partitioning for atomic updates (no brick risk), automatic rollback on failure and a boot-time integrity check. We use frameworks such as SWUpdate or Mender and implement the cloud-side update service for managing firmware rollouts across field device fleets.

From 2027, the EU Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) mandates security requirements for connected products: security by design, no default passwords, secure OTA updates, a vulnerability disclosure policy and a minimum update period. We implement these requirements from the start: secure boot, encrypted communication, authenticated device identities and a structured security update policy.

Yes – that is actually our preferred approach. When we develop device software and the app together, we can optimally align API and protocol. We deliver the device software (embedded Linux, Qt/QML), the cloud backend for remote control and the companion apps for iOS and Android (React Native or Flutter) from a single source – for consistent quality and seamless integration.
