Cloud Sovereignty, Hybrid Cloud & Backshift

The right balance between cloud agility and on-premises control for companies in Germany – GDPR-compliant and scalable.

Cloud Strategy for Data Sovereignty in Germany

Not every workload belongs in the public cloud – and not every system needs to stay on-premises. BitPointer helps companies in Germany find the optimal infrastructure strategy: from hybrid cloud to cloud backshift into sovereign on-premises environments.

Cloud Models at a Glance

Public Cloud

AWS, Azure or GCP: maximum scalability and minimal infrastructure overhead. Ideal for non-critical workloads, development environments and fast-growing applications.

Hybrid Cloud

The best of both worlds: critical data stays on-premises or in a sovereign cloud, while non-critical workloads leverage the elasticity of the public cloud.

Cloud Backshift & On-Premises

Repatriation of critical systems into your own data centres or sovereign cloud providers. Full data sovereignty, compliance assurance and cost control.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about cloud & on-premises

Cloud backshift refers to the deliberate repatriation of systems from public clouds into your own or sovereign infrastructures. Drivers include GDPR compliance, rising cloud costs, vendor lock-in and strategic data sovereignty. We guide this process end to end.

All major hyperscalers (AWS, Azure, GCP) offer EU data residency, but they remain subject to US legal frameworks (CLOUD Act). Full GDPR compliance without residual risk is only available from German/European providers such as Hetzner, IONOS or GAIA-X-aligned solutions – or your own on-premises infrastructure.

It depends heavily on workload size and operating model. For stable, predictable workloads, on-premises can be more cost-effective than cloud after 2–3 years. For highly variable or short-term workloads, cloud remains more economical. We prepare an honest CAPEX/OPEX analysis for you.

Yes, building and operating Kubernetes clusters is one of our focus areas – both in the cloud (EKS, AKS, GKE) and on-premises (kubeadm, K3s, OpenShift). Including GitOps workflows, monitoring stack and backup concept.

Yes. Migration can take the form of lift-and-shift (fast, minimal changes), re-platform (moderate effort) or re-architect (maximum cloud optimisation), depending on the situation. We recommend the strategy based on requirements analysis, not a fixed template.
